Im an  exchange student from Vietnam and now living with my host family in  McCordsville, Indiana. This cultural exchange program has encouraged me to  come back to the United States in order to study Hospitality management. I  will probably apply to Indiana University or Purdue University with  acceptance of financial aid or a high scholarship. Of course, the SAT is one of  the main factors to help me achieve this goal. Outside of school, studying,  college, and a billion serious things in the adult world, I have tons of interesting hobbies. I love trying new things, outdoor activities,  traveling, drawing (emphatically), playing piano and guitar. Helping people  is a source of my happiness and spending time with my families (now I have  2) cant be replaced by anything. How did the SAT become my biggest enemy?: I can hardly hate anything in  my life (I think my life is awesome!) until the SAT became the biggest challenge  for me on the path to college. Seriously, I even cried before sleeping  because my SAT score on the practice test was terrible. So the first  challenge I had to overcome was my abhorrence for the SAT. The second one is  probably the Critical Reading section (I meanWHO DOESNT struggle with  this?). Before I came to the United States, I rarely read books in English.  I would blame myself for being lazy. The challenge is I cant comprehend  what I just read or understand why the author mentions this or that,  blahblah Sometimes the context or topic is not familiar to me so I  had to reread it over and over again and still barely grasp the meaning of the  passages. How did the SAT become my teacher?: Each difficulty is an opportunity and  I find it completely right in this situation. The SAT really requires  persistence and a lot of determination if you want a high score. Critical  Reading taught me to read actively. I would never force myself to pay  attention to the detail and understand the reading if this  section in the test had not challenged me. I understand that when I get into  college, reading is an extremely important skill. This is a great  opportunity for me to practice and improve my comprehension. Math taught me  to use strategies to win because this section is sometimes very tricky.  Its a lesson of life. Writing trained me to focus on necessary parts   parts that give me points. As long as I understand what the graders need,  I will write the right sentence that they look for. Also, I really like to  write and express myself so learning new words helps me use a variety of  vocabulary and sound smart. I can see the improvement in my writing over  time. Oh, I forgot to mention that I really like the SAT essay questions  (although the essay section intimidates me most). They are always important  lessons or controversial problems in our society worthy of thinking about. How did I become a good student of the SAT?: I forced myself to stay  positive and FOCUS (one of my biggest problems). Before the first time I  took the SAT, I had several things to work on. First, I printed a pile of  SAT new words which at the time I knew NONE of them. I set a goal of 20 new  words a day, no delay. Because of my forgetful brain, I cant memorize  formulaic and boring things. I came up with interesting stories or related  concepts to help me memorize new words. For example, callow makes me  think of low so it means immature, inexperience, LOW. Another way that  has helped me a lot is to learn prefixes, suffixes and the roots of words  or ETYMOLOGY. Believe me, these are incredibly useful. Traditionally,  students make flashcards or things like that but these ways make me die in  boredom. SO, be CREATIVE with everything you do. With math, I studied  formulas and did a lot of practice exercises. Except those who are math  geniuses they just d o it. I cant. The only thing that helped me is to  believe working hard will pay off. The writing section is even really like math, even  the essay. I recommend the book How to ace the SAT essay even when you  hate to write. I raised 3 points in my SAT essay. Of course, I had to  write almost 20 essays to practice, not only reading the book would give  me such an improvement. (Duh!) As soon as you get familiar with the  format of the test, types of questions, formulas, the length and time of  the test, you will feel comfortable with it. Okay. Just giving advice may not be persuasive enough. This is what I  got on my first test: 1490. It couldnt be worse. Im not embarrassed to share  this with you because its not about the score. Its about how I overcame  myself and made improvement. The second time I got 1720. Its not high but  not bad. I raised 230 points in almost 2 months. I practiced with the Magoosh  one-month study guide and it was incredibly helpful. I was persistently  doing the practice questions every single day and keeping track of my  improvement data. The public debt is the amount of money the government borrows from the public, eithe r through taxes or securities. The debt the government owes itself is in the form of special programs, such as Social Security, or spending in specific areas like veterans. There are also two types of government expenses. Uses of DNA Technology Introduction DNA typing was first used in Great Britain for law enforcement purposes in the mid- 1980s and has revolutionized forensic science and the ability of law enforcement to match perpetrators with crime scenes. It wasnt employed in the United States until 1987. DNA profiling has changed forensic science. DNA technology has given police and the courts a means of identifying the suspects of rapes and murders. Thousands of cases have been closed and innocent suspects freed with guilty ones punished because of the power of a silent biological witness at the crime scene. Today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation performs the bulk of the forensic DNA typing for local and state law enforcement agencies. In criminal investigations, DNA from samples of hair, bodily fluids or skin at a crime scene is compared with those obtained from suspected suspects. (http://faculty.ncwc.edu) ‘DNA fingerprinting, or DNA typing (profiling) as it is now known, was first described in 1985 by an English genet icist named Alec Jeffreys. The past 25 years have seen tremendous growth in the use of DNA evidence in crime scene investigations as well as paternity testing. Today over 100 public forensic laboratories and several dozen private paternity testing laboratories conduct hundreds of thousands of DNA tests annually in the United States. In addition, most countries in Europe and Asia have forensic DNA programs. The number of laboratories around the world conducting DNA testing will continue to grow as the technique gains in popularity within the law enforcement com munity. (John Butler, 2005) How DNA Typing Is Done Only one-tenth of a single percent of DNA (about 3 million bases) differs from one person to the next. In criminal cases, this generally involves obtaining samples from crime-scene evidence and a suspect, extracting the DNA, and analyzing it for the presence of a set of specific DNA regions (markers). Scientists find the markers in a DNA sample by designing small pieces of DNA (probes) that will each seek out and bind to a complementary DNA sequence in the sample. A series of probes bound to a DNA sample creates a distinctive pattern for an individual. Forensic scientists compare these DNA profiles to determine whether the suspects sample matches the evidence sample. A marker by itself usually is not unique to an individual; if, however, two DNA samples are alike at four or five regions, o dds are great that the samples are from the same person. If the sample profiles dont match, the person did not contribute the DNA at the crime scene. If the patterns match, the suspect may have contributed the evidence sample. While there is a chance that someone else has the same DNA profile for a particular probe set, the odds are exceedingly slim. Many judges consider this a matter for a jury to take into consideration along with other evidence in the case. Next, the PCR product is purified and subjected to restriction enzyme digestion with enzymes that have 4 base pair recognition sites. This step generates fluorescently-labeled terminal restriction fragments. The digested products are then se parated and detected on an appropriate electrophoresis platform. For a given sample the terminal fragments will contain a fluorescent label at the 5 end and will therefore be detected. The output will be a series of peaks (fragments) of various sizes and heights that represents the profile of that sample. (Osborn, A. M., Moore, R.B. and Timmis, K.N., 2000) Polymerase chain reaction PCR is used to make millions of exact copies of DNA from a biological sample. DNA amplification with PCR allows DNA analysis on biological samples as small as a few skin cells. A polymerase is a naturally occurring enzyme, a biological macromolecule that catalyzes the formation and repair of DNA (and RNA). The technique was made possible by the discovery of Taq polymerase, the DNA polymerase that is used by the bacterium Thermus auquaticus that was discovered in hot springs. This DNA polymerase is stable at the high temperatures need to perform the amplification, whereas other DNA polymerases become denatured. Since this technique involves amplification of DNA, the most obvious application of the method is in the detection of minuscule amounts of specific DNAs. This is important in the detection of low level bacterial infections or rapid changes in transcription at the single cell level, as well as the detection of a specific individuals DNA in forensic sci ence. It can also be used in DNA sequencing, screening for genetic disorders, site specific mutation of DNA, or cloning or subcloning of cDNAs. CODIS is a software program that operates local, state, and national databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons. The odds that two individuals will have the same 13-loci DNA profile is about one in a billion. When thinking of internet security, my expectations change depending on where I am accessing the internet from. When I am accessing the web from home I feel some sort of safety because I have lots of different protection on my home computers as well as a secured network site key that cannot be accessed by my neighbors or anyone else unless my password is given to them by me. Although I have all these things that does not mean that hackers cannot get into my computer system so I am still very careful as to which sites I enter information onto. At work, I expect them to have some of the best internet security because if ever there is a problem they will have so much more too loose than an average person. Most businesses have things such as financial records and information that should not be accessed by outsiders. With there being a lot of business and organizations that compete they should be careful to make sure their private information cannot be stolen or viewed by anyone other than the people that the information is intended for. In a public setting, I will use my computer but I do understand that when doing so some of my information may be seen or accessed by others. Because of this, I am very careful of the sites that I visit. I do not enter personal information like Credit Card numbers, social security numbers, addresses or any information that I would not want to be in the eyes or hands of a stranger or a computer hacker. In my opinion, I would say that is it not legal or ethical to use your neighbor’s internet signal without their permission. Being a person who pays for internet service, I think that it is unfair to have someone else use your internet service at their convenience and not have to pay anything at all.
